The Longer Version

I started exploring costuming in the late 90s. I was the show choir kid examining garments and drafting patterns from scratch on brown paper grocery bags, measuring by hand, learning by trial and error. That curiosity turned into a career spanning three decades and more sequins than any reasonable person should encounter in a lifetime.

In the mid-2000s, I was teaching fashion at the college level. The late 2000s brought a full-scale design and production operation in Indianapolis with clients nationwide. From there, the work spoke for itself: garments engineered to conceal multiple complete looks within a single silhouette, transforming on stage in the blink of an eye. Custom sequin patterns designed and manufactured to my specifications. Garments still in active rotation more than a decade later. Entire shows costumed with over 50 unique looks for one stage, where every piece served the story.

In 2013, I stepped away. Over the next decade, I finished my doctorate, grew my family, and gained perspective on what drives me. At the end of 2022, my daughter found one of my old sample pieces in storage. We modified it to fit her, added more sequins and rhinestones, and it became her homecoming dress. Watching her walk out that night, I remembered why I do this. It's never been about fabric. It's about how people feel when they're wearing something made for them.

Starry Sky Custom Designs is named for our daughter, Jamie Star, and our son, Skyler. It carries everything I know into a practice built around the work I do best. People come to me because they want to work with me. I'm here for the design and the experience.
